Containers on the Fly
An open-source web platform for reserving Docker containers with dedicated CPU, GPU and RAM. Built so AI students can run their computing on dedicated servers, and featured in an IEEE Access publication.

# Project
Users reserve Docker containers with the hardware resources their projects need, for a chosen start and end time. The containers start and stop automatically, and multiple servers can be integrated for reservations.
The project was created at Satakunta University of Applied Sciences to give AI students a way to run their calculations on dedicated servers. It is open source under the MIT license.
# Features
A reservation calendar showing the availability of each server, login with username and password or LDAP, and admin tools for managing users, roles, computers and reservable container images.
# Architecture
The main server runs the web app, the database and a local Docker registry behind a Caddy reverse proxy with automatic HTTPS. The frontend is built with Vue 3 and Vuetify, and the backend with Python, FastAPI and SQLAlchemy on MariaDB. Separate container servers run a daemon that starts, stops and monitors the reserved containers, so capacity can grow by adding servers.
# Research
The platform is featured in the publication "Containers on the Fly: A Web-Based Docker Container Reservation Platform" in IEEE Access (2024).
# My role
Lead developer: design, architecture and most of the development and maintenance of the project.
